About the Book

Introduction to Modern Physics is a comprehensive and rigorous textbook that aims to present the fundamental concepts and principles of modern physics in a clear and logical manner. It assumes that the reader has a basic knowledge of classical physics and mathematics, but does not require any prior exposure to modern physics. The book covers both the theoretical and experimental aspects of modern physics, and provides numerous examples, problems, and exercises to help the reader understand and apply the concepts.

The book is divided into four parts: Part I deals with relativity, Part II with quantum mechanics, Part III with atomic physics and nuclear physics, and Part IV with solid state physics and cosmology. Each part consists of several chapters that cover the main topics and subtopics of each field. The book also includes appendices that review some mathematical tools and techniques that are useful for modern physics.

The book is well-written and well-organized, and uses a consistent notation and terminology throughout. It explains the physical phenomena and concepts in a simple and intuitive way, without sacrificing mathematical rigor and accuracy. It also provides historical and philosophical perspectives on the development of modern physics, and discusses the implications and applications of modern physics for science and society.

About the Authors

F. K. Richtmyer (1881-1939) was an American physicist and educator who made significant contributions to the fields of acoustics, optics, spectroscopy, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and quantum mechanics. He was a professor of physics at Cornell University from 1911 to 1939, and served as the president of the American Physical Society from 1934 to 1935. He was also a co-author of several textbooks on physics, including Principles of Physics (with E. H. Kennard) and An Introduction to Theoretical Physics (with E. Teller).

E. H. Kennard (1885-1974) was an American physicist who specialized in quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, molecular physics, and spectroscopy. He was a professor of physics at Cornell University from 1919 to 1956, and served as the dean of the graduate school from 1945 to 1956. He was also a co-author of several textbooks on physics, including Principles of Physics (with F. K. Richtmyer) and Kinetic Theory of Gases (with J. O. Hirschfelder).
