How To Buy Furniture From North Carolina Online
I've heard that you can find a style of furniture you like and then buy it at a lower price from somewhere in North Carolina. Lots of people seem to know about this, but it's new for me. Is there more than one company in NC that does this, or is it something of a cottage industry there? Can anyone point me to a business(s) that does this?

Several years ago, bending to pressures from their local dealer network, many furniture companies implemented a Minimum Retail Price (MRP) strategy which forces all dealers to sell furniture for a minimum price. Fortunately, not all mfg. have this policy and great discounts are available.
Two retailers are mentioned frequently here. Boyles is located in the Hickory Furniture Mart in Hickory, NC. Boyles sells a lot of furniture and owns and operates their own fleet of delivery trucks as opposed to contracting out to delivery companies. Delivery is a recurring problem with members on this site and Boyles has, for the most part, negated such problems. I say most part because there is much involved in mfg., delivering and setting up furniture and things can go wrong. I have bought furniture from Boyles several times and they have been excellent.
A number of members here recommend lexfurniture.com which is based in Lexington, Ky. They are aggressive with their discounts. I have never bought furniture from them but would based on feedback in this forum.
I got a quote on an expensive dining room table from one of the NC onliners for a point of reference. I then went to a local retailer who was having a sale and spent a long time with the salesperson. She showed me wood samples and compared the two tables I was considering.Even though the store's price was 10% more, I bought through them.
As a Hickory, NC native, I can honestly say that this "NC problem" is a big part of our local economy. The best way to check on prices is to come down (or up) here and visit. A great place to start is to go up US hwy 321 N from Hickory to Lenoir. It will take 2 days to go in every furniture store just in that stretch of highway if you actually look at everything. If you come down during the "after market sale" at the Hickory Furniture Mart you can find some good deals. I can say that the "Mart" has some of the higher prices that you will see in this area.
We recently moved to Greenville, SC and are in need of quite a bit of furniture. Since we're not too far from Hickory, do you recommend going to the manufacturer showrooms rather than the retail stores? Can you bring things home the same day (in a rental truck) or must it normally be ordered and delivered? For upholstered pieces, would they be likely to have matching chairs, or should I count on paying more and custom-ordering them?
I know this is an old post but it still pops up when searching for buying furniture. I just got back from Furnitureland South. I basically knew what I wanted and went with the intention of getting best pricing and ordering. I have ordered furniture from FLS 3 times over past 20 years. While researching buying furniture, Lexington Furniture Company located in Lexington, KY popped up with good reviews and comments. I had them price the same King Hickory sectional and ottoman and they were $2,163 LOWER (including taxes and delivery). I also wanted Zimmerman Chairs and reached out to Zimmerman for local distributor and was given Cherry House Furniture Galleries in La Grange KY. Zimmerman said they would give me good prices and they did via submitting info via their website. The side chair, FLS price $1036 and Cherry House price $751.50. The arm chair, FLS price $1199 and Cherry House $870. When purchasing 6 side and 2 arm chairs, I am saving $2506.90 on the chairs. Anyone looking to purchase furniture and live anywhere in USA, try these 2 stores. I know for a fact the Lextington Furniture Company in Lexington, KY does sell to customers all over. Good luck furniture and shopping and buying.
So how did High Point become the furniture capital of the world? Well, following the Second World War, there was a sudden boom for new furniture. People were buying homes at a record rate, and they needed furniture inside these new homes. To help with the building of furniture, factories required access to several materials, such as wood and cotton. While northern cities had wood, they did not have regular access to cotton and other textiles. Plus, most northern cities were already industrial cities with primary production focused in industries such as automotive and steel.

Around the 20th century, the Post War economic boom meant many people were buying many homes. But very few factories were present to furnish these new homes. There was a void in the market for furniture supply. Plus, the majority of the northern states were only manufacturers of steel and automotive.
Yes, it is very much cheaper to buy furniture in North Carolina. Furniture is cheap in NC because most of the stores make their own furniture. Plus, there is no shipping cost on the furniture. Factories usually have their own outlets, and they are usually close by. Even if furniture moves from the factory to another outlet, it is still within the state.

We relocated to North Carolina from Arizona and needed furniture. We have moved several times and were no strangers to the normal furniture stores. We revisited some of those stores before taking a trip to Capital Discount Furniture. I'm very glad that we took this trip to see what they had. We found furniture for outdoor, bedroom, living room, and dining. My daughter even commented on how low the price was for what we got. From an experienced mover and furniture shopper, do yourself a favor and take atrip to Capital Discount Furniture... I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed.
I have ordered fromhere at least twice. Once online and once in person. Both orders went off without a hitch. Item ordered online during the pandemic. Although placedonline, I would get regular email updates from an actual person, not an autogenerated email, providing me updates on the order status. Most recently Iordered a couch in the store. I was greeted and helped by the staff. They helped to guide me to specific products, requested product and like products located throughout the store. When my rep had to check on his other customers, he askedhis coworker to help me with my purchase. Once I ordered the item, the delivery guys were great. Friendly and respectful both times.
